She's right! The pros use anything from socks to fabric to the hair you pull from your hair brush (yuk by the way). It really doesn't matter what you use. The trick is to pull your hair into a pony tail, secure the item around the ponytail, then work at getting your hair to cover the material and secure with boobypins. There are several products out there that make this easier. Try Sally's Beauty Supply or even Claire's. They have products that are made for making buns such as a bendy twisty rod that you wrap your hair around(like putting in a roller or curling iron) and then you wrap your hair down to the base of your ponytail then bend it into a bun shape and they pretty much stay by themselves.

When I was in highschool and my hair was shorter to get the volume in the updo's the hairstylist rolled up a piece of hair in one of those pink hair rollers and just left it in and built up the hair around it. You could try the different sizes in hair rollers to create different sizes!
